What is the Difference Between a Scooter and a Moped?

Scooters and mopeds are known to be inexpensive modes of transport. They are economical to insure and are much more economical than buying a car. On busy roads they are a good way to travel, as they can cut through traffic faster than a car or bicycle, which make ideal for commuters.

These are some of the main differences between mopeds and scooters. There are sometimes other small differences between the two, but those depend on the individual make and model.

What Are the KEY DIFFERENCES Between a Scooter and a Moped?

Fuel

Scooters only use gasoline as fuel. They do use oil but only as lubrication. – Mopeds mix together engine oil and gasoline because they have a two stroke engine.

Engine

Scooters and mopeds have different engine sizes. Scooters have generally larger engines, with an engine size ranging from 50cc to 800cc. Mopeds have a much smaller engine with only one chamber. The engine of a moped does not usually exceed 50cc.

Speed

Scooters can reach higher speeds than mopeds. Scooters can travel at speeds in excess of 50mph, but this is dependent on the size of the scooter’s engine. Mopeds can reach a maximum speed of roughly 40mph.

Because of their low speed range mopeds are not classed as motorbikes, and due to this they do not need to be licensed as a motorbike. Neither mopeds nor scooters are allowed to be used on international freeways or motorways.

Wheels

Wheels on a scooter are quite small. Mopeds have larger wheels, similar to those on a motorbike.

Starting the Engine

Scooters have a key to start the engine, they are motorised vehicles and they do not have pedals. Scooters have a platform for the rider to place their feet upon. Mopeds are entirely different, they use pedals to start the engine.

Cost

Both scooters and mopeds can be bought at a reasonable cost. Scooters are usually more expensive due to them having a larger engine size. Older scooters or mopeds can be bought for a very small amount of money, but being second-hand they will probably need money to be spent on repair and general upkeep. New scooters and mopeds will be more expensive, but they will last longer and will be more worthwhile, needing less money to be spent on maintenance.

Legal Age Limits

The legal age limit for using a scooter or moped needs to be checked. The age limit is different in different countries. It is therefore of utmost importance to check what the legal age limit is for the country before using a scooter or moped. Scooters are classified as motorbikes and this means that the age limit is usually higher for scooters. Because mopeds have smaller engines they are a safer option than scooters. Also check the legal requirement in the country for the use of safety equipment, such as safety helmets.
